"Little Elf" chip WeChat will fly to the space station

KickSat satellite mother ship (art imagination) will carry several small chip satellites

 

If all goes well, on July 6 this year, about 100 sticky-size "Chipsat" will be launched to the International Space Station. In just a few days of testing, these "mini" satellites will transmit data about their energy loads and azimuths, then drift out of orbit and burn out in the Earth's atmosphere. The researchers said that these small satellites are expected to provide scientists with new ways to detect the solar system.


These cube-chip satellites, named "Sprite", were developed by aerospace engineer Zachary Manchester during his PhD at Cornell University. They are about 3.2 cm long and weigh about 5 grams, with a pair of 60 mAh solar cells, a radio and an antenna. When current is passed through a coil, the chip can be turned into a compass pointer aligned with the Earth's magnetic field, allowing the chip satellite to control the orientation; it can also be reprogrammed to fly away from the space station.


The "elf" is the smallest member of the small satellite family. Since 2003, scientists have launched hundreds of "cube satellites" with a side length of 10 cm, and only launched more than 120 last year. Arizona State University engineer Jakan Sang is currently working on a smaller "nano-satellite." The chip satellite is smaller and cheaper and can be used as a disposable sensor to detect dangerous or toxic environments.


According to the British "Nature" magazine website on the 1st, the size of the shoebox "KickSat-1" launched two years ago failed to put the 104 chip satellites carried on the International Space Station. This KickSat-2 mission will carry the more powerful "elf" satellite.


Researchers have confirmed that the "elf" satellite can survive in extreme space environments. In 2011, three chip satellites were attached to the outside of the International Space Station, and when scientists re-find them in 2014, they were still working.


The team's leader, Mason Peck, said the small satellites could be used for multiple scientific explorations, such as validating behavioral models of space debris and mapping high spatial resolution images of the Earth's magnetic fields. However, for long-term interstellar exploration missions, chip satellites also need better laser communication capabilities. The research team is confident that it can do this. (Reporter Liu Xia)
